Six professors from the School of Environmental Science and Engineering and Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) visited the Gwangju Science High School to talk about environmental issues. These professors initiated the event, and in consideration of the students’ intensely schedules visited during evening hours. At 6 p.m. on May 18th, Gwangju Science High School, located in Gwangju High-Tech District, was packed with students excited to hear from their special guests speakers.
Among the six experts in environmental science who visited the school were Professor Kyung-Woong Kim of GIST and Professor Detlef Mueller from Germany who drew a lot of attention. Jung-Ho, Sonu President of GIST, also prepared a special presentation for the 200 young future scientists.
One might ask why professors who are equally if not more busy than the students of Gwangju Science High School made the time to visit. Professor Kyung-Woong Kim who planned the event said, “I think it is our job as scientists not only to focus on research and teaching (graduate) students, but also to act the part of preacher (in order) to connect the science with general (everyday life).” He also added, “We wanted to give (them) an opportunity to have students experience personally that science is not a difficult (thing to learn) but an easy and familiar subject,” which he explained was the aim of the event.
