Doctorate candidate Yang-June Gang’s splendid feat for his research on microfluidic device blood viscometer

A student at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) is at the center of attention for winning an award in a domestic symposium for outstanding research following his award at an international conference.

According to GIST, Yang-June Gang, a doctorate candidate of the BioMedical mico/nano Device Lab at the GIST School of Mechatronics (Professor Sung Yang), was recently awarded the Biomedical Engineering Award at the “6th International Conference on Pediatric Mechanical Circulatory Support Systems & Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Perfusion”.

Gang announced a thesis titled “Viscometer for the Continuous Measurement of Blood Viscosity” at the conference held at the Harvard Medical School, U.S. early May.

The Conference awards the Biomedical Engineering Award to doctorate candidates that announce notable researches after deliberation by the Deliberation Committee. Gang was granted the honor of being awarded the prestigious prize.

On May 15, Gang announced another thesis titled Microfluidic Device Viscometer for Blood Viscosity Measurement at the 41st Spring Seminar of the Korean Society of Medical Biological and Engineering (KOSOMBE) held at Kangwon University.

Gang conducts research on viscometers that can measure blood viscosity with greater precision and ease under the direction of Professor Sung Yang. This study is expected to be used in the monitoring of health conditions of cardiovascular disease patients, including diabetes, high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries, and real-time monitoring of patients during a heart surgery.
