Korea-Japan Enhance Cooperation in Ultra-Intense Laser Research

- Osaka University Laser Research Institute discussed cooperative initiatives with Advanced Photonics Research Institute of GIST

□ Advanced Photonics Research Institute (APRI, Director, Lee Inwon) at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, (GIST, President · Young Joon Kim) joins hand with a partner in Japan, the world leading laser research center, representing Japan to launch joint efforts to study ultra-intense laser. 

  ❍ APRI held a seminar jointly with the Institute of Laser Engineering (ILE) of Osaka University on August 7^th ~8^th (Wednesday and Thursday) in Seoul and Gwangju to introduce global cooperative moves including exchanges of research outcomes in the field of photonics technology and ultra-intense laser.

❍ ILE is a global leading research institute driving laser research in Japan and pioneered in laser nuclear fusion since the 1980’s and developed Gekko XII, a high-power laser system. In 2001, the institute succeeded in fast ignition test, accelerating efficiency of laser fusion 10 times higher and thereby strengthening its presence as one of the three laser fusion research institutes.

 ❍ As laser-base nuclear fusion research is not active yet in Korea, High Energy Laser (HEL) is not developed but APRI is leading the field with the development of 1.5 PW (1.5 trillion watt) peak power ignition and ILE appreciated this and was active in joining hands with APRI for joint research.

 

□The two research institutes signed an MoU last March to initiate joint research and on August 7^th, 10:30 AM, the ceremony to sign annex of MoU and joint seminar will be held, attended by Yang Bong Ryul, the Vice President of Public Affair of GIST and Lee Inwon, Director of APRI and Tsuji Kichiro, former Vice President of Osaka University and Hiroshi Azechi, Director of ILE. 

  ❍ Annex of MoU is an agreement to share research findings, papers and patent rights from joint research activities.

❍ The joint seminar will be a venue to share research progress of the two institutes and presentations on specific themes. APRI will give presentations on ‘Femto second and Petawatt (1000 trillion watt) laser, particle acceleration using ultra-intense laser, interaction between laser and materials in relative intensity area’ while ILE will offer presentations on time-resolved radiation diagnostics and progress on the development of  large mode area diffraction grating for petawatt laser.
