□ National Research Foundation of Korea included research work of Professor Lee, Heung No (School of Information and Communications) and Professor Jung Cheol (School of Environmental Science and Engineering) at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President ž Young Joon Kim) among the 50 most outstanding basic research findings of 2013 announced on Oct. 16th.

 

‘Most outstanding basic research findings’ are selected among the peers delivered from national R&D projects out of which have huge scientific, technological, economic and social ripple effects. National Research Foundation of Korea identifies and certifies ‘most outstanding basic research findings’ every year to encourage researchers’ passion for new research breakthroughs.

 

  2013 50 most outstanding basic research findings’ consists of basic engineering research (30 cases), humanities and liberal arts research (9 cases) and government research (11 cases). They underwent a strict evaluation process by the subcommittees (13 subcommittees) in phase one, by divisions (basic engineering research, humanities and liberal arts research, government research) in phase two and overall evaluation in phase three.

 

Coding theoretic compressive sensing for multiple sensor systemby Professor Lee, Heung No and his team earned recognition as one of the most outstanding research findings.

 

His team’s thesis has been selected as Highlights of 2012 by Journal of Neural Engineering, which is an international journal on neural engineering for its contribution to developing wireless Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) system known to be one of interface technologies of the future. The thesis, which paved the way to develop Nano-resolution compact spectrometers, was also published in Optics Express, which is a prestigious journal in the area of optical technology, in recognition of the remarkable research achievement.

 

Compression of ultra high-capacity data into small amount of data and data recovery made possible by the research findings raise hopes of advancing next-generation technologies such as next-generation cooperative communication, security communication, sensor network, flash memory, high-resolution spectrometer, BCI system, ultrasonic image, fMRI and cell image capable of processing vast amount of data.

 

Observationally constrained estimates of carbonaceous aerosol radiative forcing by Professor Chung and his team was also selected as one of the 50 most outstanding basic research findings of 2013.

 

The thesis by Professor Chung and his team was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a globally eminent journal, in June 2012 for its contributions to suggesting solutions to keep the earth from global warming. It was also introduced as a research highlight in Nature Climate Change.

 

Professor Chung demonstrated in his research that reducing emissions of carbon particles than carbon dioxide, which is the solution being applied to ease global warming, is easier and can greatly contribute to mitigating global warming. His research findings opened possibilities to shifting the existing industrial and social structure into a new one virtually free of carbon dioxide emissions.

 

□ Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning will present certificate plaque to researchers of the 50 most outstanding basic research findings at Imagination Hall, Gwacheon National Science Museum in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi-do at 14:00, Oct. 16th (Wed.). A special exhibition on the 50 researches will be held until Oct. 27th followed by exhibition in Seoul, Busan, Daejeon, Gwangju and Daegu until Nov. 29th.
