GIST celebrates the 20th anniversary with various events ‘GIST’s coming of age’ together with citizens Nov. 13th: “GIST Harmony Festival”… student clubs’ performances & GIST Culture Night Nov. 15th: the 20th anniversary ceremony, mini concert for appreciation and special lectures by 6 distinguished guests Nov. 16th: GIST Music Festival for citizens (A-Pink, Block B, etc.), General Meeting of the GIST Alumni Association On the occasion of the 20th anniversary, Gwangju Institute of Science Technology (GIST, President Young Joon Kim) said on Nov. 11th that a variety of events will take place in order to commemorate GIST’s coming of age, which will include “GIST Harmony Festival of Students (Nov. 13th),” the 20th anniversary ceremony (Nov. 15th) and GIST Music Festival with Citizens (Nov. 16th). GIST prepared a number of commemorative events and invited local residents as a token of appreciation to them for being the staunch supporter of GIST over the past two decades as well as in order to celebrate the past accomplishments of GIST, both as organization and research institute. Nov. 13th: 《GIST Harmony Festival》 will take place in the afternoon for GIST students in undergraduate and graduate programs. Student clubs will put up fantastic shows to present dance and singing skills they have sharpened while working hard as aspiring scientists. In addition, GIST Culture Night will take place on the grass behind the administration building. Organized by international students in the graduate program, this cultural event will be a good opportunity to learn and enjoy traditional culture of Korea and those of many other countries. Nov. 15th: The 20th anniversary ceremony of GIST will be held at Dasan Hall of Oryong Hall, GIST at 1:30 p.m. The ceremony will be attended by approx. 500 people including the 1st Vice Minister Lee Sang-mok of the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, Mayor Kang Un-Tae of Gwangju Metropolitan City, university presidents, science high school headmasters, former and incumbent Chairmen of GIST Board of Trustees, donors to the GIST Development Fund and GIST students and faculty members. Nov. 16th: GIST will hold GIST Music Festival on the grass square in front of the School of Mechatronics at 2:00 p.m, as a token of its appreciation to citizens who have supported GIST over the past two decades. The concert will feature not only popular local bands in Gwangju but also top idol singers such as A-Pink, Block B and Secret, and is expected to serve as an opportunity to celebrate GIST’s coming of age and share pop culture with citizens in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do. On the same day, the GIST Alumni Association will hold its first general meeting at multipurpose hall of Oryong Hall at 5:00 p.m. The Alumni Association was organized last year and has since made efforts to build and promote the network of alumni by collecting information on alumni and opening Facebook of the Association. After the general meeting, ‘Alumni Appreciation Night’ will take place at 6:30 p.m. in order to introduce major achievements and development of GIST over the past 20 years and present the ‘Proud Alumni Award.’ (Contact for more information: 062-715-2024)
