A new research-institute company has been established with a patented technology owned by GIST to venture into the environmental device market for shale gas development.

Mirae Holdings, which is jointly owned by four specialized universities for science and technology in Korea (KAIST, GIST, DGIST and UNIST), announced on December 18 that it set up Eco Energy Solutions, a research-institute company specializing in environmental equipment based on a patented technology in Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) developed by Professor Kihong Park’s team in GIST School of Environmental Science and Technology.

Eco Energy Solutions is the second research-institute enterprise founded with a GIST-owned patent and the third daughter company of Mirae Holdings. The new company will be housed in the GIST Business Incubator building, and GIST and Mirae Holdings will provide it with R&D and other supports for successful technology commercialization.

Mirae Holdings and Energy Holdings Group will jointly make investments in Eco Energy Solutions to develop and market a real-time water-quality monitoring device for shale gas recovery water using the LIBS technology. GIST, Mirae Holdings, and Energy Holdings Group signed an investment agreement on December 17 for that.

CEO Park Hee-won of Eco Energy Solutions, who is also CEO of Energy Holdings Group, said, “Managing environmental pollutants has become one of the most important issues in shale gas development in North America. Water-quality monitoring is an important part of it, so we will do our best to commercialize our products and seize the opportunities.”

CEO Kim Young-ho of Mirae Holdings said, “We will develop a real-time water-quality monitoring device for shale gas recovery water using the LIBS technology, as well as related software. Revenues will be generated by 2017 and reach 15 billion won in 2020.”

Acting President Kwan H. Lee of GIST said, “Eco Energy Solutions was set up based on GIST’s research competence and patented technology. I hope it will prove the potential and competitiveness of research-institute companies. We will continue to work with Mirae Holdings to set up more of them.”
