Hard working student-volunteers honored at GIST

1

GIST held a Volunteer Awards Ceremony on August 31, 2015, for those students who volunteered during the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade and the International IT Training Program.

There were a total of 50 student-volunteers: 34 volunteered for the Universiade and 16 volunteered for the Moldova (Eastern European country) IT Training Program. GIST President Seung Hyeon Moon presented awards to six of the volunteers and encouraged them to continue honoring GIST.

The 34 student-volunteers who supported the Universiade cheered for competitors at the diving competitions held at Nambu University and assisted the venue by helping with crowd control and clean up. The 16 student-volunteers for the International IT Training Program in Moldova taught computer skills to locals of all ages. They also served as Korean cultural ambassadors by teaching Korean as well as a few K-pop dance routines.

After the ceremony, students shared their experiences. So Hang Kim, who volunteered in Moldova said, “I felt pride and gratitude by being able to help Moldovans with my knowledge and skills.”

GIST College Dean Do-Kyeong Ko said, “As a college focused on science and technology, we will continue to expand activities such as the International IT Training program so that we can remain faithful to our social responsibilities. Furthermore, we are planning to pursue such outreach programs not just at the college-level but at the entire university-level to be more inclusive of our graduate students and researchers."
