The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) has established the GIST Climate Change Academy to better educate business and civic leaders about issues related to global warming. The genesis of the GIST Climate Change Academy resulted from the Paris Climate Conference in December of 2015, which resulted in the adoption of a legally-binding global climate deal by 195 countries.

The opening ceremony to commence the course was held on April 6, 2016, in Oryong Hall. Over 80 guests joined GIST President Seung Hyeon Moon for the opening ceremony, including Gwangju Mayor Janghyun Yoon, Gwangju Education Director Huigook Jang, Gwangju Science Director Shinyung Kang, District Manager Hyungbae Min, and former GIST auditor Sangyoon Kim.

The opening ceremony commenced the first class of 31 students who are participating in the 12-week long GIST Climate Change Academy course, and each participant was individually introduced by GIST President Seung Hyeon Moon.

The class will meet every Wednesday from 7:00 pm to 9:50 pm in Oryong Hall for 12-weeks. They will be taught by 17 distinguished lecturers, including Dr. Dongpil Min who is the director of the Green Technology Center, Director Daegyoon Oh of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Clean Development Mechanism, and former GIST President Young Joon Kim who is a professor emeritus in the School of Environmental Science and Engineering.

The 12-week course will conclude on June 30, 2016, and they will attend a graduation ceremony on July 6, 2012, in Europe. The second GIST Climate Change Academy will be held next year.
