Korea"s most gifted chemistry student gather at GIST
for a two-week Chemistry Olympiad... "Let the competition begin!"

The 2016 Chemistry Olympiad, which is a two-week long summer program for gifted high school students, opened at 4:00 pm on July 31, 2016, at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST). Attending the opening ceremony for the 2016 Chemistry Olympiad was GIST President Seung Hyeon Moon, President Changhee Lee of the Korean Chemical Society, Chairman Deokhyoung Lee of the Chemistry Olympiad, GIST faculty members from the Department of Chemistry, as well as 111 high school students (70 freshmen and 41 sophomores) from across Korea and their parents.

GIST President Seung Hyeon Moon said, "Science and technology is a creative endeavor with great advances being made by creative individuals. GIST provides the best educational environment in Korea for chemistry students, and I hope that the 2016 Chemistry Olympiad will unleash the students" passion for success!"

The 2016 Chemistry Olympiad is being hosted by the GIST Department of Chemistry and is being sponsored by the Korean Chemical Society, the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation, the Dow Chemical Company, and LG Chemical of Korea.

Students will participate in classroom lectures and perform laboratory experiments during the two week program, which is meant to provide an exceptional educational experience for gifted students with the aim of training future leaders in chemistry related fields. In addition, the best students in the program will be selected to participate in the International Chemistry Olympiad where Korean students have traditionally performed exceedingly well.

The 2016 Chemistry Olympiad Summer School Program is being directed by GIST Professor Ji-Won Seo who said, "Being able to server our community and the nation through this summer program is incredibly rewarding for me because GIST is providing these student with the most enriching educational experience possible."
