co-hosts an international symposium on optimal technologies

□ The GIST International Environmental Research Center (Director Joon Ha Kim) participated in the 2016 International Symposium on Endogenous Technology - Smart Green Development Vision at Seoul National University"s  Global Convention Plaza from November 30 to December 2, 2016.

  ∘ "Optimal technology" is developed with specific consideration of the culture and environment of the developing region in recognition of the fact that the most ideal technical solution may not be the most technologically advanced solution, such as ICT. The symposium was intended to introduce technological innovation developed through the combination of ICT and appropriate technology.

□ At the symposium held under the theme of "Appropriate Technology with ICT Convergence", the GIST International Environmental Research Center organized a session on December 3, 2016, titled "Climate Change and Appropriate Environmental Technologies."

  ∘ Projects seeking appropriate solutions for environmental issues for inclusive growth expressed by Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), along with examples of technologies applied to mitigate climate change, especially in developing countries where damage from climate change is increasing.

  In this session, Professor Yunho Lee and Professor Kyoung-Woong Kim of the GIST School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering presented a case-study of their utilization of non-powered water purifier technology to solve clean drinking water problems caused by climate changein the South Pacific island of  Fiji.

  ∘ Professor Sun-tae Kim (Daejeon University) presented appropriate technology for air quality monitoring, and the director of the cooperation for the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning announced the future policy direction of the government"s climate technology development and cooperation.

□ The symposium was hosted by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, the GIST International Environmental Research Center, the Korea Research Foundation Global Technology Sharing Center, the Society of Optimal Technology, Seoul National University"s International IT Policy Program, and 16 other organizations.
