GIST's Culture Technology brings Bronze Age shoes back to life as 3D holograms

□ Ancient artifacts that have been restored to life by the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST • President Seung Hyeon Moon) as a 3D hologram are being permanently exhibited at the National Museum.

□ The Korea Culture Technology Institute (KCTI) at GIST specializes in cultural and technological research and has developed a three-dimensional holographic image technology that has been used to restore Mahan-era Bronze Age shoes that were excavated from the Bumamri burial mound in Naju city in Jeollanamdo.

∘ The previous KCTI research project was a collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to use 3D holographic technology to restore the original shape and material of gypsum shoes.

□ The technology transfer and permanent exhibition were created because of the strong positive response from visitors to the experimental holographic Mahan Gondong shoe exhibit, which was co-organized by GIST and National Naju Museum last March. The exhibits were created to supplement the permanent exhibition space of the museum.

∘ Especially for this exhibit, the artistic fish decorations along with the shoes are restored in a very high resolution holographic displays that provides a strong sense of immersion and appeal for the artistry of the ancients.

□ Director Soonbo Park of the Ko Korea Culture Technology Institute said, "This exhibition is a good example of how technology developed at GIST has contributed to revitalizing local cultural heritage into a more vivid and interesting experience. In the future, we hope to expand this technology to encompass entire cultural sites."
