Professor Jun Chang-Duk of GIST

Appointed in the ‘Best Achievements of Basic Research 2012’

  - For discovering controlling elements for T-lymphocytes

- Awarded certification plaque by the Minister of Education, Science and Technology

Professor Jun Chang-Duk(age 47) of School of Life Science, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GISTPresident, Kim Young-Joon) was appointed for the ‘Best Achievements of Basic Research 2012’ selected by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the National Research Foundation of Korea. On September 13, 2012, Professor Jun was awarded the certification plaque granted in the name of Minister of Education, Science and Technology at National Science Museum in Daejeon.

Professor Jun was recognized for his research achievement that discovered a new protein controlling the ‘T-lymphocyte’ function which is responsible for immune system of human body and was appointed for Top Achievements of ‘2012 Basic Research in Science and Engineering’. On the surface of T-lymphocytes is a receptor (TCR) that detects external invading materials and the Research Team of Professor Jun identified that this receptor combines with ‘IGSF4 protein’ inside the cell membrane of T-lymphocytes to amplify the signal. It was the first-ever discovery that identified that a new protein called IGSF4 is responsible for controlling the function of T-lymphocyte.
