[Press Release] Success in Creating Attosecond Extreme Ultraviolet Light Source for the First Time in the World

For Development of Ultra-High Speed Nano·Bio Microscope Attosecond Extreme Ultraviolet Light Source Successfully Created for the First Time in the World

- Presented by APRI and Dr. Yi-jong Kim

At Super-laser Lab in Nature Communications - “Opening Opportunity to Identify Bio-Data Conveyance System through Measurement of Time Change in Cells”

□ A Korean research team succeeded in creating attosecond extreme ultraviolet light source near the water window region for the first time in the world, opening a new opportunity for development of nano·bio microscope, which can observe fundamental movement of body phenomenon.

Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology(GIST,President   Young Joon Kim) and Advanced Photonics Research Institute(APRI), and Ultro-Intense Laser lab(Director Tae-mun Jeong, First author Dr. Yi-jong Kim) led the research under “Femtosecond Photonic Beam Research Facility Installation and Operation Project” included in the Knowledge Economy Ministry’s ICT Research Foundation Establishment Project and the paper was published in the latest issue of Nature’s sister magazine “Nature Communications”(November 27).  (Title of paper: Relativistic frequency upshift to the extreme ultraviolet regime using self-induced oscillatory flying mirrors)

□ The attosecond extreme ultraviolet in the water window region which is not absorbed into water is an essential light source for development of ultrahigh-speed nano·bio image technology, so best research groups in advanced countries are fiercely competing with one another in this field.
