Professor Chun is a leading researcher on osteoarthritis, a disease characterized by cartilage degeneration. His team identified the roles played by zinc, the zinc transporter ZIP8, and the transcription factor MTF1 in osteoarthritis pathogenesis. The research results were published in Cell in February 2014 and are expected to provide a new clue to preventing and curing osteoarthritis, which is becoming increasingly more common with the aging of the population.

The Kyung-Ahm Academic Prize is awarded by Kyung-Ahm Education & Culture Foundation, established on a 100-billion-won (approx. 100-million-dollar) contribution from Chairman Song, Geum-jo of the Taeyang Group based in Busan. This year’s winners include Chaired Professor Jaegwon Kim of Brown University (Philosophy), Professor Soo-Bong Kim of Seoul National University (Physics), and Professor Hoi-Jun Yoo of KAIST (Electrical Engineering).

The award ceremony is scheduled to be held at Nurimaru APEC House in Haeundae, Busan, on Friday, November 7. The winners will each receive a plaque and 200 million won in prize money.
