Professor Hyo-Sung Ahn of the School of Mechatronics and Professor Heechul Choi of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering were named winners of the Knowledge Creation Grand Prize, which is the MSIP (Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning) Minister’s Award given by the Future Research Information Forum 2014 hosted by KISTI (Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information).

Since 2009, KISTI’s Future Research Information Forum has been awarding scientists in Korea with the highest academic contributions annually. Unlike other prizes that largely depend on recommendations and reputations, the Knowledge Creation Grand Prize chooses winners based on a strict system of numerical analysis. Using the two most widely used international citation indexes, SCIE (Science Citation Index Expanded) and Scopus, the Forum has been selecting every year the 10 most influential scientists based on the top 1% highly cited papers published in last 10 years.

Professor Hyo-Sung Ahn has been developing original theories and their applications in control systems and their design. He has been serving on editorials boards of international journals and in organizing committees of international conferences. He was also selected as GIST Dasan Professor in 2013 for his outstanding research results, including the publication of four top 1% highly cited papers in mechanical engineering.

Professor Heechul Choi has been exploring convergent areas of research by combining nanotechnology and environmental engineering. He published a paper in Water Research in 2011 on carbon nanotube composite membranes that can overcome the limitations of conventional membranes. He has recorded an h-index of 29 and total citations of over 3,200 and has also made a lot of contributions in terms of technology transfer.
