[Press Release] Six GIST Members Awarded on National Science Day

On the 48th National Science Day, four faculty and two staff members of GIST were awarded by the Korean government for their exemplary contributions to the advancement of science and technology. They received their awards at the science day ceremony held at the National Science Museum in Gwacheon on April 21.

 

Prof. Kiseon Kim of School of Information and Communications received a Science and Technology Merit Medal. Since joining GIST in 1994, he has published over 200 papers and served in academic leadership positions such as Department Chair, Research Center Director and Dean of Academic and Student Affairs. He has also registered 54 patents and contributed greatly to technology commercialization.

 

Prof. Beongki Cho of School of Materials Science and Engineering received a Presidential Citation. He has fabricated single crystals for 25 years, published more than 280 papers, and made significant contributions to the study of superconductivity and other novel properties of new materials.

 

Prof. Jang-Soo Chun of School of Life Sciences received a Prime Minister’s Citation. He has made original contributions to understanding the causes of osteoarthritis, a disease characterized by cartilage degeneration. He has published over 100 papers, including one in Nature Medicine in 2010 and another in Cell in 2014.

 

Prof. Gun-Young Jung of School of Materials Science and Engineering received a Ministerial Citation. An outstanding researcher in fabricating nanostructures, he has registered 10 US patents and 21 domestic patents and published more than 100 papers.

 

Mr. Chang Hyun Kang of Office of Construction Planning received a Ministerial Citation for his contributions to attracting highly-qualified students and faculty members by successfully completing construction projects for GIST College buildings, new graduate and college dormitory buildings, etc.

 

Mr. Deuk Jin Lee of Office of General Affairs received a Ministerial Citation for his contributions, as the staff member in charge of legal affairs of GIST, to protecting the institution’s intellectual property rights.
