GIST alumni listed in ranking of the world"s top 1% of researchers

With almost 9 million scientists publishing papers every year, it is difficult to judge the quality and impact that scientists have on their respective fields. To help rank the quality and impact of papers published by scientists, Thomson Reuters Intellectual Property & Science compiles a yearly listing of the top 1% of the world"s "Highly Cited Researchers." This listing is derived, in part, from the Essential Science Indicators, which is a component of the Web of Science.

In the most recent listing, 23 researchers in Korea (19 are Korean nationals and 4 are foreign nationals) have been recognized as being among the world"s top 1% of researchers. Among these, three are former GIST graduates: Professor Jae Hyung Park, Dr. Kwangmeyung Kim, and Professor Eun Seong Lee.

Professor Jae Hyung Park received his M.S. and Ph.D. from the School of Materials Science and Engineering at GIST in 1998 and 2002 respectively. Then from 2002 to 2004 he performed his post-doc with the Korean Institute of Science and Technology Biomedical Research Center and then another post-doc from 2004 to 2005 with the School of Pharmacy at Purdue University in the United States. He is currently an associate professor with the School of Chemical Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University where he runs the Biomacromolecular Research Lab.

Dr. Kwangmeyung Kim received his M.S. and Ph.D. from the School of Materials Science and Engineering at GIST in 1999 and 2003 respectively. He performed his post-doc at the Biomedical Research Center at the Korean Institute of Science and Technology where he is now a principal research scientist.

Professor Eun Seong Lee received his Ph.D. from the School of Materials Science and Engineering at GIST in 2004 and performed his post-doc at the University of Utah in the United States. He is currently a professor of biotechnology at the Catholic University of Korea.

It is notable that all three prominent researchers received their training and education at the GIST School of Materials Science and Engineering, which has a strong reputation for numerous research achievements and breakthrough both domestically and internationally.
