GIST science book donation to community children"s center in Gwangju

A total of 780 books were donated to help cultivate scientific understanding in young children

In the spirit of the holiday season, the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) through the International and Public Affairs team has given a total of 780 science books as well as scholarship funds to 15 local children"s centers in the Gwangju area where GIST students are actively engaged in volunteering their time to help tutor underprivileged young children learn math, science, and English. GIST students are able to volunteer their time at a local children"s center through the GIST Community Education Volunteer Program that began in 2010 and continues to operate today.

The Dean of International and Public Affairs, Professor Byoung Hun Lee explained the purpose of the book donation program: "We hope to stimulate the scientific curiosity and imagination of young children through these donated books. Next year, GIST will continue to donate book, to provide scholarships for elementary schools in the Cheomdan area, as well as to continue with the GIST-Science School Program for Young Children. GIST will expand these activities and provide more opportunities to help enrich the community"s culture of science."
