The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) under the leadership President Seung Hyeon Moon has hosted an official ceremony to kick-start the 13th semester of the "GIST Learning Field" program to match student volunteers with local area community children"s centers. The ceremony was held at Oryong Hall on March 30, 2016, and was attended by over 40 people.

For this iteration of the "GIST Learning Field" program, a record high of 61 students applied to participate. For comparison, the 12th iteration of the program only had 35 student volunteers. This dramatic increase in student volunteers has allowed the number of student volunteer for each community children"s center to increase from 1-2 to 3-4. Also, the number of participating community children"s center has also increased from 15 to 16.

The "GIST Learning Field" program began in March of 2010 and has continued now for seven years. The program is comprised of GIST undergraduate and graduate students who volunteer their time to help local children learn math, science, and English while offering mentorship advice.

GIST President Seung Hyeon Moon said, "The children who go to these community centers often endure various hardships and difficulties in life, so these community centers serve a very important civic function for these children. Even though GIST specializes in science and technology, we have a social responsibility to provide philanthropic services to the community. So I will continue to support these community children"s centers and the GIST students who volunteer there."
