Professor Rachel Levy from Harvey Mudd College opens summer session course

1

GIST has started an exchange and cooperation program with Harvey Mudd College, which is the leading liberal arts college in the United States, by inviting Professor Rachel Levy to teach a two week "Mathematical Modeling for Engineers" course from June 27 to July 8, 2016.

Harvey Mudd College was established in 1955 in Claremont, California. It is a private liberal arts college and, much like GIST, is focused on science and engineering. Among American colleges, Harvey Mudd College is considered to have the best curriculum in the field of mathematics, engineering, and science. Last year, they were ranked first among engineering colleges by the U.S. News & World Report magazine.

This is the first time that GIST has offered a course with a professor from Harvey Mudd College. Students are expected to learn mathematical logic and numerical analysis by modeling real world engineering problems in this comprehensive course.

Professor Rachel Levy is vice-president of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), and her expertise extends to applied mathematics (biological and industrial fluid dynamics) as well as to the development of innovative college courses.

GIST College Dean Do-Kyeong Ko said, “This is a chance for GIST students to experience cutting-edge education from the most innovative college in America. By inviting professors from Harvey Mudd College and Caltech to lecture at GIST, this will help transform the education in Korea with GIST being the flagship liberal arts science and engineering college.”
