"Contributing to National Security including National Defense and Disaster by Science and Technology R & D" 9th Defense Science and Technology Policy Debate held at GIST

□ The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) held the Defense Science and Technology Policy Debate, which was attended by government officials from the Ministry of National Defense and Ministry of Health and Welfare as well as R&D experts.
 
  ∘ The theme of this policy debate is about the role of specializes science and technology institutes in supporting national defense and is being held by Jong-ro Kim (National Assembly defense committee) and GIST on January 9, 2017, at the GIST Administrative Building.
 
  ∘ The forum will be attended by the Minister of Electric Power Resources Management for the Ministry of National Defense, Gyeongsang Provincial Government, and Bok Soo Choi who is the Director of the National Security Bureau.
 
□ This event is designed to share the R&D status of key government agencies related to comprehensive national security and to explore the future direction of R&D for science and technology related to defense.
 
  ∘ The first part of the discussion introduced the current status of GIST"s science and technology related to defense research, and a special lecture will be held under the theme of "Security Through Science and Technology" by researchers from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Evaluation and Planning (KISTEP).
 
  ∘ The second part included a GIST"s panel presentation and discussions on the status defense related research. The director of the National Security Division, Bok Soo Choi, discusses the role of science and technology for disaster and safety management as well as the role of science and technology in responding to public health crises.

□ GIST plans to make various efforts to revitalize research regarding defense related science and technology based on the outcomes of this policy debate.
 
  To this end, the GIST Center for Security Science and Technology was established last December to determine the areas where GIST can make significant contributions to national defense.
 
□ GIST Professor Kihoon Lee, who organized the event said, "In Europe, including the UK and Poland, there are dedicated centers for research into security science and technology at universities that are managing research and development at the national level. I hope those will serve as a model for Korea to establish and expand the role of science and technology specialization universities that support national security."
 
□ Jong-ro Kim, who co-hosted the forum, said, "The development of security science and technology is essential to prevent war and to protect the public. I hope that GIST, which was newly appointed as a specialized research institute by the Defense Agency, will play a leading role in contributing to national defense and security through research."
