□ Undergraduates at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Seung Hyeon Moon) have achieved excellent results in the national college math competition.

□ The Korea Mathematical Society was hosted the 36th National College Mathematics Competition on November 18, 2017, and undergraduate Jonghyun Lim (physics major) won the gold prize while Joo-hoon Kim (physics major) and Dong-ha Lee (general studies) both won the silver prize.

∘ Every year, the National College Mathematics Competition is organized by the Mathematical Society and is divided into math majors and non-math majors. The three GIST students took part as non-math majors.

□ Nine universities competed in the second round of this year's competition, producing 28 award winners. GIST won three prizes, Seoul National University won ten prizes, and KAIST won seven prizes.

∘ Although the GIST College students are not math majors, they have been steadily improving their math skills as members of the mathematics club 'Pencil & Paper' at GIST, which is advised by Professor Hyunsuk Kang.

□ Professor Hyunsuk Kang, a professor of general education, said, "This is the result of the students' self-motivation in applying '3C 1P' (creativity, cooperation, communication ability, problem solving ability) at GIST College with their passion for mathematics."

The awards ceremony for the 36th National College Mathematics Competition will be held December 27, 2017.
