Professor Jin-Ho Yoon to author the 6th Assessment Report for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

□ Professor Jin-Ho Yoon of the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Seung Hyeon Moon) was selected as the lead author of the 6th Assessment Report for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

 * In November 1988, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) convened a meeting of international meteorologists, oceanologists, and experts on glaciers. The IPCC conference had over 3,000 experts, including economists. In 2007, the IPCC was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for contributing to a better understanding of climate change caused by human activities.

□ The IPCC has provided a scientific basis for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) by publishing research evaluation reports on climate change, impact, adaptation, and response. The Sixth Assessment Report will also be used as a key basis in subsequent negotiations to deal with climate change.

□ The IPCC Secretariat subdivided the work into three working group divided by, specialty, region (continent), gender balance, and so on.

∘ In Korea, a total of eleven experts were selected, and a total of five experts were selected in the first group with Professor Jin-Ho Yoon.

∘ As a member of the first working group, Professor Jin-Ho Yoon will be focusing on identifying current climate change patterns and presenting future climate change scenarios under the theme of climate change science. The second working group will address the impact, vulnerabilities, and response to climate change. The third working group will analyze technical, economic, and policy tools for greenhouse gas reduction.

∘ Each report will be published after the final approval of the member states in 2021 after four major author meetings and three expert and government reviews.

□ Professor Jin-Ho Yoon said, "This will be a good opportunity to participate in the assessment report with unequaled ability to identify climate change issues from around the world and to summarize the results of current research."

□ Professor Jin-Ho Yoon has been teaching and researching climate change and climate modeling since he joined GIST in March of 2016. Before coming to GIST, he worked on climate change and climate modeling from 2010 to 2016 at the PNNL Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (US Department of Energy).
