GIST International Environmental Research Institute (IERI) co-hosts the Korean Environmental Engineering Society's Expert Group Conference

□ GIST International Environmental Research Institute (Director Joon Ha Kim Jun-Ha Kim) co-hosted the '2017 3rd Korean Environmental Engineering Society's Experts Group Conference' held at Ewha Womans University ECC from June 19 to 20, 2017.

∘ This event was the 3rd Expert Group Conference held this year, which was attended by about 120 participants from 13 professional groups and 6 professional committees.

□GIST International Environmental Research Institute organized a session on the theme of "Climate Change Countermeasures and Appropriate Technologies" that was held on the second day of the event, June 20. The session examined the role of proper technological responses to climate change in various situations with in-depth technical and policy discussions.

∘ Projects that seek to find a solution to the environmental issue for inclusive growth expressed by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), along with examples of technologies applied to adapt to climate change, especially in developing countries where damage from climate change is increasing, were shared and discussed with the attendees.

∘ In this session, Director Joon Ha Kim gave a lecture on the subject of "Everything we know is changing: The era of climate change chaos and the 4th Industrial Revolution," proposing innovative 4th Industrial Revolution convergence technologies in the "Smart City for Climate Change Response" as a technological solution to climate change for the sustainability of future societies.

∘ Regarding technologies to cope with climate change, Director Gi-wan Jeon of the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology discussed the current and future state of carbon resource technologies. GIST Professor Yunho Lee of the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering presented the development and application of a gravity membrane filtration and purification system to solve the clean drinking water problem caused by climate change. He also introduced practical application for rainwater treatment in Kiribati and Tuvalu in the South Pacific.

∘ Finally, Dr. Su-il Kang of the Climate Technology Team of the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning discussed the government's policy and support policy for technology cooperation and development in response to climate change and introduced the nine major fields of science and technology that are directly linked to national development and growth that is urgently needed in solving social problems.

□ Director Joon Ha Kim said, "Real solutions to counter climate change can be found by sharing collective knowledge of experts, and I want this conference to play a central role that that collective effort to solve climate change."

□ The Expert Group Conference was jointly hosted by Korea Environmental Engineering Society, the GIST International Environment Research Institute, and Ewha Womans University.
