GIST International Environmental Research Institute hosts GIST-UNEP "Education for Strengthening Desalination Capacity for Southeast Asian Countries" Joint Training Program

□ The GIST International Environmental Research Institute (Director Joon Ha Kim) hosted the GIST-UNEP "Education for Strengthening Desalination Capacity for Southeast Asian Countries" Joint Training Program from August 28 to September 1 to improve seawater desalination capacity .

∘ Recently, water shortages in developing countries are increasing due to rising sea level caused by climate change. However, due to various social and economic circumstances, there is a lack of awareness of seawater desalination technology.

∘ The purpose of this training program is to strengthen the high-efficiency low-energy seawater desalination capacity for coastal cities in Southeast Asia and for South Pacific Ocean Islands, thereby helping to solve the water shortage problem and while creating an economic base for Korean companies.

□ This event was attended by Mr. Parlindungan Purba, a member of Indonesia's parliament, and nine senior officialsm researchers, and students from Vietnam, Philippines, Bangladesh, Fiji, and Kiribati. ▲ Summary and description of seawater desalination process and technology ▲ Low-energy seawater desalination process ▲ Share information and opinions on new technology and fusion technology of seawater desalination.

□ The first day began with an introduction to GIST and the International Environmental Research Institute, and then lectures were given by Professor In S. Kim of GIST, Professor Soo Han Kim of Pukyong National University, Professor Sang Ho Lee of Kookmin University, and Director Chan Gi Kim of POSCO E&C.

∘ Participants visited POSCO's seawater desalination plant in Gwangyang as well as the Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction's seawater desalination plant in Busan to experience the actual operation of seawater desalinization plants, which included discussions about the feasibility of such plants in the participants' home countries.
□ On the last day, Director Joon Ha Kim introduced new technologies for seawater desalination. "With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, future predictions become more important than ever, and the need for solutions and technological strategies to counter future environmental problems due to climate change is increasing. The GIST International Environmental Research Institute will be able to provide solutions to address environmental problems in Southeast Asian."

□ The GIST-UNEP training program was hosted by the International Environmental Research Institute and was supported by POSCO E&C, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, and by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning.
