Professor Joon Ha Kim participates in the development of ultra-high performance computing and simulation software for the 4th Industrial Revolution

□ On October 26, 2017, Professor Joon Ha Kim of the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering and the director of the International Environmental Research Institute at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Seung Hyeon Moon) hosted the 7th Science Education Hub, which was held to provide advanced education and research environment using simulation based on supercomputing infrastructure (EDISON).

∘ EDISON (education-research integration through simulation on the net) is a project that started in 2011 to develop a platform and simulation software (SW) that enables real-time visual learning and research through simulation of fundamental computational science and engineering principles with emphasis on computational thermal fluids, nano-physics, computational chemistry, computational design, structural dynamics, computational medicine, and, for the first time this year, urban environment.

□ The kickoff workshop included about 100 students, experts from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Korea Research Foundation (NRF), the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), the EDISON Central Center. Presentations were given about various research achievements in the various specialties.

□ The EDISON platform and software can be used for virtual experiments anytime and anywhere with computers, and theories and ideas learned in the classroom can be easily implemented, making it accessible not only to college students but also to students in science and gifted high schools.

∘ So far, 351 kinds of educational software have been developed at 51 universities, providing services to approximately 42,000 people in 1,148 subjects and is recognized for its technological and innovation capabilities at home and abroad, while also supporting 15 small businesses.

□ Multidisciplinary Support for the Urban Environmental Center the development of the EDISON platform will include Professor Do Sun Kang (Kyunghee University), Professor Sang Won Lee (Yonsei University) and Professor Young Chul Kim (KAIST).

□ Professor Kim Jun-ha said, "In order to prepare for the 4th Industrial Revolution era, we have fostered high-level convergence manpower and contributed to strengthening R & D capabilities by spreading computational science engineering software in Korea. I would like to contribute to the establishment of a software-based society through the EDISON project."
