The Electronic Warfare Research Center was open at GIST.

GIST is the lead agency of the research center. The Center has about 40 participants including universities and large corporations.

11.6 billion KRW will be invested into the Center for the next 9 years.

The Center is expected to strengthen South Korea’s military power and bring much benefit to affiliated businesses.

 

 

 

 

 

 

□ Electronic warfare will play a pivotal role for South Korea’s military technology and Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President ž Young Joon Kim) contributes to South Korea’s efforts to build the foundation for future development of electronic warfare technologies by establishing a research center for electronic warfare.

 

❍ On December 5 (Thursday) at 2 p.m. in GIST’s Administration Building, GIST held an opening ceremony of “the Electronic Warfare Research Center” with 150 people present including Kim Young-joon (GIST President), Moon Ki-jeong (Head of Acquisition Planning Bureau at Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA)), and Lee Heon-gon (Vice Director of Agency for Defense Development (ADD)).

 

□ By the year 2021, the Electronic Warfare Research Center will spend 11.66 billion KRW to conduct researches on the technology to lay the foundation for electronic warfare in the future including rthe technology to detect and analyze electronic information for electronic warfare operating system, rthe jamming system which can be equipped into unmanned aerial vehicles and high-speed moving objects, rthe electronic protection technology against electronic warfare, and rthe modelling technique to establish the battlefield environment for electronic warfare and analyze its effectiveness.

❍ In addition, the Center will employ training programs to nurture experts in electronic warfare technologies and operate cooperation programs with universities and research institutes in the US, the UK, Australia, and Sweden.

❍ The Electronic Warfare Research Center consists of 165 researchers and professors from 15 universities including GIST (the lead agency), Seoul National University, Korea University, Yonsei University, and KAIST. And the Center signed agreements with 28 local businesses which have enough technological prowess in the military including Samsung Thales and LIG Nex1 and with 5 institutes including Swansea University in the UK to conduct joint researches.

 

□ The Electronic Warfare Research Center is expected to bring several benefits for the military, the economy, industries, universities, and institutes.

❍ First, the Center will help South Korea’s electronic warfare technologies lower the dependency on foreign technologies and work as the ground for researches and technologies of future generation electronic warfare, which in turn will greatly contribute to full independence of and advancement in the military and to increasing military power.

❍ Second, the Center will develop electronic warfare-related technologies which will encourage the development of affiliated mid- and small-sized businesses and contribute to the development of private sector’s technological prowess. Third, the Center will bring about innovation in university education of and research on the military as it will improve mutual understanding among professional fields dedicated to the development of electronic warfare technologies and will produce students who have profound specialized knowledge in large electronic warfare systems.

 

□ The Electronic Warfare Research Center made a presentation about research plans for the electronic warfare technology forum and for each of the Center’s research objectives before the opening ceremony and held a signboard hanging ceremony in front of Dasan Building after the opening ceremony.
